(Similar cartoons on The Take Two series or the Candy Apple books make the girls look thinner than is realistic.) I especially like the cover illustrations because the girls look strong and athletic, not ridiculously thin. Our heroine, Hannah, is a seventeen year-old Amish girl that helps a local Mennonite woman, Mrs. The story is pretty intense for a Christian Romance. I know because I interact with Amish country often. Nobody has that smooth of a complexion in Amish county. If I look out my window, I see that same view minus the superimposed mournful Amish gal who totally is wearing make up. The cover is very standard for the Amish Romance scene. That doesn’t make it any less easy to read, so grab yourself an Amish deli donut and quilt. It contains mature themes and a surprising lack of direct Bible quotes. “When the Heart Cries” by Cindy Woodsmall isn’t your mama’s Christian Amish romance book. Given the trigger warning I placed at the beginning of this review, you can already imagine how wild this is about to be. It is just I wanted a juicy book to digest with you. I wanted to write a really good book review for my Amish Romance review, which isn’t to say that my reviews suck. But I enjoy the occasional religious romance just to change the flavor. A good example of Christian romance that goes overboard on the Bible verses can be read here. I’m not a huge fan of Christian romance since it can be uh, heavy handed with the Bible verses. In fact, I am no stranger to the sub-genre. Trigger Warning: This review discusses rape. She somewhat spontaneously began to write, with her first book being published in 1982. Following college, Osborne traveled before moving to New York City. One of four children, Osborne moved around in her childhood before attending the University of North Carolina. Unfortunately, the fraternal battle ended in death for both brothers. The play describes the defeat of Polyneices, King Oedipus’s son and Antigone’s brother, who attempted to seize the throne of Thebes from his brother after King Oedipus’s death. The narrative of Antigone is set after the narrative of Oedipus at Colonus. In Sophocles's Antigone, the struggle between the characters Antigone and Creon symbolizes Athens's eternal battle between primal phusis and orderly nomos. A prominent issue of the time was the tension between human nature, phusis in Greek, and civic law, nomos in Greek (Muntz, 3). Like many Greek tragedies, Antigone was not created simply to be entertainment Sophocles used this play to comment on contemporary issues in Athens. In 442 BCE, Antigone by Sophocles was performed as the last installment of a trilogy that also included Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus. During this festival, plays from prominent poets would be performed in competition with one another. Every year, Athenians would gather together for the Dionysia, a festival to the god Dionysus. Greek tragedy played a large role in ancient Athenian culture. She’s grateful she has her niece Zoe, a student at Cambridge University, who’s been like a daughter ever since the death of Zoe’s parents when she was fifteen years old. Her mother died when she was just a young girl, and she lost her emotionally distant father shortly after her marriage to Sebastian. Although it’s been a year since he drowned during a vacation on the Greek island of Naxos (Mariana’s childhood home), she can’t stop blaming herself for his death (she pressed him to go on vacation despite his reluctance) or wondering if she’s somehow cursed to lose everyone she loves. Mariana Andros is a group therapist struggling with her feelings of loss and grief since the sudden death of her beloved husband Sebastian. It tries to be clever and completely misses the mark. Boring and borderline pretentious, overstuffed with red herrings and unlikeable characters (caricatures is a better word), The Maidens is a slog from start to finish. Unfortunately, The Maidens is nowhere near as good as The Silent Patient (it’s not even close), and I almost DNF’d it several times. Reader, I love unpredictable surprise twists (and diabolical villains)! A lot. It was nicely creepy, chock full of compelling characters, and ended with an excellent twist I didn’t predict. I read and enjoyed Alex Michaelides debut, The Silent Patient. |
